Poncho Sánchez (born Filoberto Sanchez[1][2], October 30, 1951) is a Mexican American conguero (conga player), Latin jazz band leader, and salsa singer. In 2000, he and his ensemble won the Grammy Award for Best Latin Jazz Album for their work on the Concord Picante album Latin Soul. Sanchez has performed with artists including Cal Tjader, Mongo Santamaría, Hugh Masekela, Clare Fischer, and Tower of Power.[3][4]
Early life[edit]
The youngest of eleven children, Poncho Sanchez was born in Laredo, Texas and reared in Norwalk, California. Growing up, he was exposed to and influenced by two different styles of music: Afro-Cuban music (mambo, son, cha-cha, rumba, guaracha, and Changui) by greats such as Tito Puente, and bebopjazz, including the works of Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker.[5]
Originally a guitarist, he discovered his talent for singing during an audition for the R&B band The Halos that rehearsed across the street from his residence.[6] Sanchez became the lead vocalist of The Halos, and would go on to teach himself the flute, the drums, and timbales before finally deciding in high school to pursue conga drumming above all.
Sanchez’s long career includes a vast musical legacy with dozens of LP and CD album releases and many thousands of public appearances. He is a favorite and often-featured artist at regional and national Latin Jazz festivals and concerts.[7]
Career[edit]
In 1975, Sanchez's idol, vibraphonistCal Tjader, invited him to perform a set with his band.[8] Seeing the young man's talent, Tjader hired Sanchez for a week before officially making him a full member of the ensemble. Sanchez played a crucial role as conguero for several years until Tjader's death in 1982.
Before he died, Tjader suggested that Concord Records founder Carl Jefferson sign Sanchez and his soon-to-be-formed group under the Concord Picante label. Tjader's wishes were honored, and the first two records were composed and arranged by long-time Tjader collaborator Clare Fischer. Sanchez went on to produce 19 albums for the label, eventually garnering a Grammy for his work.[9][10]
Currently, Sanchez is respected as one of the top American percussionists of our time.[11] He performs frequently in venues varying in size from concert halls to local jazz festivals. His 2005 CD, Do It!, features the iconic funk band Tower of Power on two tracks as well as South African trumpeterHugh Masekela.[12]
Sanchez is a frequent collaborator with bandleader José Rizo. He played conga on the Grammy-nominated album Mongorama produced by Rizo.[13]
Sanchez was featured on Ilya Serov's single 'Tangerine', released on January 9, 2018.[14]
Sanchez's latest album titled 'Trane's Delight' is set to release on September 20, 2019.

Conguero Poncho Sanchez is one of the movers and shakers in Latin jazz. But while growing up in the 1960s, he was obsessed with the classic Stax and Motown sounds, and this influence peeks out from time to time in his music. Never more so than on Out Of Sight!, which actually functions as a tribute to his hero James Brown. Here Sanchez makes it funky with such soulful luminaries as Billy Preston, Ray Charles (who sings his classic “Mary Ann”), Sam Moore (of Sam And Dave fame), and Brown alumni Fred Wesley and Pee Wee Ellis. Suffice it to say, Sanchez’s band and guests dig a groove deep enough to make the Godfather proud. They don’t rely on the hits either; instead, choosing some lesser-known 1960s boogaloo gems and Brown jams, as well as some groovy new originals. Sanchez is surprisingly impressive on vocals here, but it’s the tight and funky Latin arrangements that make this so super bad.
The legendary conguero may be known as one of the modern kings of all jazz that’s Latin, but he’s also an old-school soul junkie at heart, having grown up in southern California in the ’60s; while he was learning to play tropical Latin music professionally, his radio was full of classic Stax and Motown. Increasingly aware that classic R&B songs adapt well to the jazzy cha cha tempos that drive his ensemble, Sanchez evolves beautifully on the new collection into a style of Latin soul that’s truly compelling. The opening track, the funky, brass-driven cha cha “One Mint Julep,” features not only the organ arpeggios of Billy Preston, but also two of the horn guys from the James Brown band, Fred Wesley and Pee Wee Ellis. “JB’s Strut” funks out with the horniest of them, but Brown is paid even greater homage on blues/soul/big-band/Latin renderings of three of his tunes, “Saints and Sinners,” “Out of Sight” (sung with a tongue-in-cheek Brown bravura by Sanchez), and “Conmigo.” And while he’s at it, Sanchez invites two legendary soul men to make things even more authentic. Sam Moore has a blast with the sassy “Hitch It to the Horse,” while Ray Charles adds his whimsical touch to the salsified blues tune “Mary Ann.” The remaining question is, just where is the Godfather of Soul himself? Hopefully, he’s proud of one of the most unique tributes to him ever fashioned.
